Tonight's video is the 2005 NCAA Quarters with Greg Jones majoring Matt Pell. In my opinion Jones sort of can get overlooked as one of the all-time greats and some of his trademark slickness is on display here. Interestingly enough Matt Pell was an AA this season placing 7th at 184, then 3rd two years later at 165. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mhTwW1RdSIAnd why exactly do you think that is Earl? I've noticed the same thing. People talk about recent greats and names such as Stephen Abas and Ben Askren and David Taylor and Kyle Dake often come up, but Greg Jones is rarely if ever mentioned. He went 1-DNP-1-1 at the NCAA's and only lost three times in his career. (9-8 to Michigan's Otto Olson, 3-2 t.b. to Hofstra's Ralph Everett and 3-2 to Michian State's Rashad Evans) Is it because he went to West Virginia, a non traditional wrestling school? Is it because he wrestled at a higher weight and most of the time 174, 184, 197 and HWT are looked at as "weaker" weight classes compared to the lower and middle weights? I'm curious to see what your perspective is.

I'd say a big part of it is that he was at West Virginia. Maybe and this is purely speculation, but he didn't seem to have a recognizable rival and the guys he beat in the NCAA Finals (Greg Parker, Ben Heizer, Tyler Baier) are not household names, as far as NCAA Runners-Up go. There wasn't a Pendleton/Askren, Perry/Hendricks, Dake/Taylor-type rivalry. And they weren't from the traditional power schools (Parker-Princeton, Heizer-Northern Illinois). Baier was from Cornell, but they were still laying the foundation for what they have become today.

To always remind myself of just how good Jones was, I often think back to his match with Chris Pendleton. Pendleton was one of those guys minus a loss to Ben Askren, a loss to Brad Dillon and a loss to E.k. Waldhaus, that sophomore through senior years, did not lose. He won and not only did he win he usually won by major decision or technical fall. He whipped everyone. Scores of his matches were usually 10-0, 17-4, 19-6. He racked up the points like it was nobody's business. Yet against Jones he himself was whipped. Jones scored 4 takedowns and secured a riding time point against Pendleton in route to a 10-4 victory.

We're back and I have a whole new batch of video to go through....Some really good stuff I think. Here's the 2006 EWL Championships with True Freshman Gregor Gillespie winning his first of 3 EWL Titles. He would win an NCAA Title the next season. Bonus points if you can find "Stove Pipe".... tinyurl.com/nuq3urb

Going a little farther back with tonight's video....1999 NCAA Semi's and Stephen Neal of Cal-State Bakersfield against the eventual 3rd place finisher Karl Roesner of Illinois. Neal, the World Champion that same season, eventual 3x Super Bowl Champ registers a tech fall. Super impressive in all facets of the game, I particularly love him working for the fall almost the entire time on the mat. www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMeNzVlmUcI
