Tonight's match is one of the most controversial in some time! 2006 NCAA Quarter Finals Chris Fleeger vs Mack Reiter. For you young bucks, this match almost shut down themat.com's college forum back in the day. If I remember correctly Fleeger later joined the Wrestling Talk message boards when a member of this board (no names) was speaking ill of him. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jzm1AUqpYVg&feature=youtu.beI hope you are not referring to me. If you are, I want to clarify exactly what happened. At the 2006 BIG 10 tournament, Wisconsin's Tom Clum defeated Fleeger by a score of 11-4. On themat.com message boards, there was a substantial number of people saying that there was no way that Clum would have ever defeated a healthy Fleeger and that Fleeger must have had the flu or terminal cancer. As a big fan of Clum's I started off by defending him and saying how talented of a wrestler he was. I didn't appreciate all of the undermining and degradation of members towards Clum's talents and abilities. As time went on, the glorification of Fleeger and the insistence of him being a much, much better wrestler than Clum persisted. I stated that Fleeger was a human being, capable of defeat and that he had lost other matches, for example to Luke Eustice of Iowa, and his loss had nothing to do with health. Eustice just happened to be the better wrestler that day. It wasn't Fleeger I had a problem with, nor was it Purdue fans in general. It was the members from Pennsylvania who think that their high school wrestlers are Gods and can't be touched unless they're on their final week after battling with AIDS for years. It got to the point to where I did say that I hoped that Fleeger and Clum met again at the NCAA's and that Clum beat him again. It wasn't because I had anything against Fleeger, but I was so sick of the idolization and God like status that fans granted him. I was even more sick of how much degradation that they put towards Clum. I did get heated and I did go out of line with some of the things that I said. I admit that. I do want to make it clear that I sent Chris Fleeger a personal message and told him that I never meant anything against him as a person or as a wrestler, and that I was just angry with some of his fans, especially for the manner in which they spoke so lowly of Clum's talents and abilities. Fleeger responded to my message and from what he said back to me, I believe that he and I understood one another. I am a fan of Fleeger's and I was a fan of Fleeger's before this whole thing started. I just snapped when no one would admit that maybe Tom Clum was the better man that day at the 2006 BIG 10 tournament. Everyone was insistent that something had to be wrong with Fleeger, and gave Clum absolutely no credit whatsoever. That is what it was about to me.

The video for today is from a request by Lehigh All-American Mason Beckman. He wanted to see a Semi-Final match from the 2003 NCAA Semi's between one of his coaches Brad Dillon and Oklahoma's Robbie Waller. www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_ta3QQlt00

So today Missouri defeated Ohio State on the strength of their National Champion bumping up a weight class. Here's a video of the 2007 National Dual Finals Missouri vs Minnesota. Returning Champ Ben Askren bumped up to take on the returning NCAA Runner-Up at 184, Roger Kish. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZIbVzQFJEk

The video posted today is the 2010 NCAA Semi-Finals where Dan Vallimont upset returning NCAA Champ Jarrod King of Edinboro. For the backstory...If you go back to the first two years of this website, I have a special spot for Dan Vallimont. He did a series of blogs during the 2008-09 season that I posted on the site. While others participated as well, he provided the most entries and was the most candid. Frankly, I can't remember too many other athlete blogs like this that were so honest. In the 2009 season, Dan started as one of the top 157lbers after finishing 3rd in the nation the year before. In the blogs he mentioned the difficult class load that he was taking, the obstacles that the particular classes presented in terms of him having to miss practice and train late night with the assistant at the time Mark Perry. At the same time he was struggling to make 157 and had to move up to 165 midseason. He talked about the weight cut, as well as, a relationship problem that he was having at the time and many other topics. I'd say a large portion of college wrestlers face some or all of these problems, but him being able to document these struggles while competing was very surprising to me. In fact, the previous coaching staff at Penn State wasn't thrilled that he put all of this information out there. I thanked him for doing participating five years ago, and I am again now. I usually try to maintain a sense of professionalism and stay impartial while I am at event. This time however, I do admit I was very, very happy for Dan getting this win over Jarrod King. No disrespect meant for King, as he was an incredible story himself. Extra points if you can spot me sitting next to FloWrestling's Willie Saylor! www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUzCRl9kY3M&feature=youtu.be

I can remember Vallimont having a difficult season the year before after showing so much promise as a sophomore. It was rewarding to see him have such a successful senior season. One of my favorite things about this sport is what I like to call, "the bounce back". Jon Reader of Iowa State and J.P. O'Connor are two more examples. It was also the year I met you in person, as well as seeing you last year in Oklahoma City and hopefully for a minute or two this year in St. Louis. I wonder if I'll see myself in this. If I recall I sat fairly close to you while I was there.

Tonight's video is the 2005 NCAA Quarters with Greg Jones majoring Matt Pell. In my opinion Jones sort of can get overlooked as one of the all-time greats and some of his trademark slickness is on display here. Interestingly enough Matt Pell was an AA this season placing 7th at 184, then 3rd two years later at 165. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mhTwW1RdSI
