Point to ponder would be this ... of those schools from conferences not named the EIWA, Big Ten and Big 12, those other schools got their full lineups in there and got to score points, wheras at the NCAA Tournament, only qualified wrestlers are scoring.
I personally think Vegas is the best in-season college tournament, but one thing that makes the Scuffle unique is its A) location B) fact that it's a Division I only tournament.
I think what hurt the Midlands in the past is some of the smaller programs wanting to get kids in for exposure and the Midlands was so selective, schools were denied. The Scuffle filled the void for teams that wanted a quality tournament and didn't have the budget to go to Las Vegas or Reno to get it, while not having to wait for the Midlands invites.
My roomate was ranked in the Top 20 his last two years, was denied his junior year from the Midlands and then his senior year, was accepted (was ranked 8th at the time) and then finished third -- only losing to Joe Williams -- yes, that Joe Williams -- in the semifinals.
I think every big tournament like that provides something for the fans and the stats and rankings and such.
Then again, last time I checked, aren't we more looking at the individual matches than we are "team races" -- although Minny-Mizzou was a good race last season, wouldn't those individual matches from those "joke teams" be worth watching?
