KENT, Ohio - Sixth-year Head Coach Jim Andrassy announced on Wednesday Oct. 1 the 2008-09 Kent State wrestling schedule. The Golden Flashes will compete in four in-season tournaments and 14 dual meets- which includes three meets against teams who finished the season ranked in the top 25 of the final 2008 USA Today/InterMat/NWCA Division I Poll.
According to Coach Andrassy, “We called four of the top six teams in the nation. Nebraska responded, so we are going to Lincoln this year and then next season, we will host both Nebraska and Michigan at the M.A.C. Center.”
After an intersquad scrimmage Nov. 1, Kent State will kick off the regular season at the Oklahoma Gold Tournament in Brockport, N.Y. The following week, they will travel to West Lafayette, Ind. for a trio of dual meets against Purdue, Columbia and Tennessee-Chattanooga. The team closes out the month of November at the Body Bar Tournament in Ithaca, N.Y.
The Golden Flashes begin their home slate with a dual meet against Clarion Dec. 14 at 3:05 p.m.
On Dec. 20, Kent State travels to Lincoln, Neb. to grapple with defending Big XII champion Nebraska. The Cornhuskers finished fourth at the NCAA Championships last season and return four All-Americans this season.
Kent State finishes the month of December at the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C.
The New Year starts off with a bang for the Golden Flashes when they travel to Columbus to square off with in-state rival Ohio State. The Buckeyes finished second at the national championships last season and return four All-Americans- including two national champions.
“We wrestle Ohio State every year and it is a great rivalry,” said Andrassy. “For the last three years, both these teams have been the best squads in the state of Ohio. It is a great event because the majority of wrestlers on both squads are from Ohio.”
Following the dual with OSU, Kent State travels to Hampton, Va. for the competitive Virginia Duals Jan. 9-10.
After renewing their annual rivalry at Cleveland State Jan. 17, the Golden Flashes close out the month with a pair of home dual meets against Northern Illinois (Jan. 24) and Pittsburgh (Jan. 31).
February features four Mid-American Conference dual meets. Beginning the month at Buffalo on the seventh, Ohio travels to the M.A.C. center on the 13. On Feb. 15, the Golden Flashes make the first of two trips to Ypsilanti to take on Eastern Michigan. The Eagles also host the MAC Wrestling Championships March 6-7.
Closing out the regular season, Kent State will travel to Mount Pleasant to take on defending MAC Champion Central Michigan on Feb. 19. However, the Chippewas lost five of their starters from the 2007-08 season.
“Year in and year out, we have as good of a schedule as anyone in the country,” said Andrassy.
The Flashes enter the season ranked 23rd according to the Wrestling International Newsmagazine (W.I.N.) poll, the first time in school history.
