Earl,
There is a whole lot more to this story thrn is in this one papers story. I have heard some of it, but not enough to comment here. I would remind everyone there is always two side to a story and we might not hear both sides of this story. I hope that Blanton has a great college career and enjoys where ever he decides to go.

Yeah I know there is. And as far as Brands goes, he is not allowed to comment about unsigned recruits we will not get to hear his side. I was shocked to get home and see the craziness that this story brought out on themat. At least this happened before a LOI was signed and it looks like he has already given a verbal to Illinois and will surely have a fine career there. And I'm sure life will go on fine in Iowa.

No matter where Coach Brands goes or who he drafts there seems to be controversy. I don't know the guy. Is he so disliked that folks are just making up stories about him. Is it just sour grapes? I think asking a kid who is a top recruit to pony up an extra 40% after he has agreed to come to your school is a big bite. Maybe the coach should take one for the team and pay the guys working his camp $12K every summer, more or less coming out of his own pocket, as one of the posters on themat suggested. Kids who are high drafts are offered "full rides" by more than one school in many cases. To think that isn't part of the equation in deciding where to commit is shallow. A total commitment from the both school and the athlete is key in this discussion. If this year it is 40% who's to say next year wouldn't have been the same. It's a done deal and hopefully both sides will benefit. Who's Coach Brand's agent?

The response to this on the mat is now over 210 posts......I don't call it a bait and switch, just a switch. It happens all the time....rumors on Ostate.com that Spates waited till after LOI was signed to change the deal....this young man obviously has talent, and Tommy obviously is comfortable with the talent he has in the room and the kid ranked higher by AWN that he also recruited.....He would have been welcome to join....his stock dropped and so did his offer.....If he would have pinned his way thru Super 32 there is no way Brands would have done this. I am sure both will survive and since I am a Poke fan I am just glad this is happening over there instead of over here.

As I already said there are always two sides to a story. Here is Blanton's Quote from a atory in todays Iowa City Press Citizen: NCAA rules prohibit Brands and Iowa officials from commenting on prospective recruits until they have signed a letter of intent. "(Brands) really didn't go against his word, and I don't want people to think less of him as a person or a coach because it was my decision," Blanton said. "They didn't force me away. It was just something as a team that they had to do and it made me look at a couple options, and that's the way it went. But he didn't completely renege on his offer or anything like that. He didn't do anything bad, and I don't want him to have the reputation that he does that kind of thing." Blanton, a projected 174-pounder in college, said he is considering Illinois and other schools that have recently come back into the picture for his services. willyman... I was going to put up that link but you beat me to it.
I have heard that the full ride is over at UI and that's part of the reason that the original story just did not make sense to me. To my knowledge Brands' wrestlers are extremely loyal to him, to the point of transferring and giving up a year of eligibility to be in his program.
That being said, I wish him all the best.
