^^^According to the Delaware State University athletic site, former NCAA champion, Ken Melchior, has been selected as head wrestling coach. Ken is from Lindenhurst, Long Island, and was coached at Lock Haven State College by the legend Gray Simons. In college Melchior won the NCAA title in 1968 and was a 3X NAIA champion (one OW). Melchior was an excellent leg rider and consummate scrambler. Also, hard to believe, but he could switch off the whistle against good college wrestlers. Melchior had one of the quickest switches I've ever seen. Melchior had a successful high school coaching career in New Jersey.
I'm really fired up that the Hornets hired Ken Melchior as head coach. -Stove Pipe

^^^Eagle123, Yes and I am a HUGE Ken Melchior fan. I recall going to the 1968 NCAA Tournament at Rec Hall in Penn State and checking the 115-pound bracket. We figured Ken could win the NCAA's that year at 115, unless Rick Sanders decided to suck down. If Sanders weighed in at 115, we were hoping Melchior would be in the opposite bracket so they'd meet in the finals. Well, Sanders went 123 and Ken won the NCAA's. As I recall, Melchior was the only wrestler from a school in the east to win an NCAA title that year.
Lock Haven had an excellent wrestling program in the 1960's, probably top 10 in NCAA point scoring 1960 through 1969. I've known Melchior since the mid 1960's and my sister went to college with him a year before transferring to the Univ of Maryland. In the Army Melchior, as I recall, wrestled both freestyle and Greco and was very good in those styles, too. I think that two of the things you need at Delaware State the next couple years is patience and stability. On we go, -Stove Pipe

^^^EAGLE, YES I would thoroughly enjoy seeing a Delaware home meet this season, and I'm looking forward to seeing their sched. Coincidentally, I've seen the Hornets wrestle dual meets the past two seasons, doing the play-by-play at American U over the AU/Eagles system. -Stove Pipe
P.S. Would you please post Coach Melchior's email address after he gets situated? Thanks.
