^^^Todd Roberts, after four years as assistant, recently was promoted to head wrestling coach at Millersville University. Coach Roberts has provided some info on Millersville’s 2009 lineup possibilities, and notes that there will be a lot of competition for the starting spots through the middle weights. Millersville qualifies for the Div I NCAA Tournament through the East Region qualifier, and also is a member of the powerful PSAC wrestling league.
Without naming the whole roster, here are some Millersville grapplers to watch this coming season –
125 John Andel is a senior from Red Lion, PA. Andel is a three-time East Region place winner, and, in addition, this past season placed fifth in the PSAC Tournament and won 14 bouts on the year.
133 Sean Reed, a junior out of PA, could be the starter at this weight.
141 Mike Greck is a sophomore from Nazareth, PA. Mike was 2007 PIAA AAA runnerup at 135, and this past season, competing at 141, placed sixth in the PSAC’s, second in the 2008 East Region Tournament, and was 18-18 for the year.
149 Word is that senior Brent Huffman (PA) plans to cert down at this weight and start.
157 Jared Hostetter (SR/PA) arguably is Millersville’s best wrestler. This past season Mr. Hostetter placed fourth in the PSAC’s, was runnerup in the Wilkes Open, won the East Region crown at 157, competed in the 2008 NCAA Tournament, and completed the campaign with an excellent W/L of 34-8.
165 There are four guys in the hunt to start at this weight, and I’ll mention two of them. One is Dave Morey, a soph out of Garnett Valley (PA), and another is Josh Evans from Clarks Summit (PA). This past season Mr. Morey placed in both the PSAC tournament and the East Region event, and won a total of 16 bouts on the year.
Josh Evans, a fourth-year junior, redshirted the 2008 season (going 13-5 competing unattached). The 2007 season, competing at 165 pounds, Evans finished top 12 in the huge Penn State Open, was Hitchcock runnerup, finished fourth in the PSAC’s, was 2007 East Region runnerup, and completed the year with a healthy record of 16-15.
174 The starter for the past two years at this weight, Jeremy Brooks, returns. Brooks is a junior out of Jersey Shore, PA. He placed 4th in the 2007 PSAC’s, was 2008 East Region runnerup, and won a total of 24 bouts for those two seasons.
184 Sophomore Jason Foor, out of South Huntindon (PA) looks to move up to this weight and start. Foor went 3-6 last season for Millersville down at 157, and was 36-3 his senior year of high school, then competing at 152 pounds.
197 Ray Bennett has the inside track to start at this weight. Bennett is a true sophomore out of Clarks Summit, PA (Abington Hights). This past season, competing at 197, Mr. Bennett was 2008 East Region runnerup and went 17-15 on the year.
285 Look for Brad Ladd to start at heavyweight this season for Millersville. Ladd is from Dallastown, PA, and I think he is a true freshman this fall at Millersville. As I recall, Ladd placed in the 2007 PIAA AAA Tournament, competing at 285. (I don't know what Ladd did last season, but at least I ain't lost.)
I wish Coach Todd Roberts and his Millersville team the very best in 2009 and beyond. –Stove Pipe
