^^^Here is a 2009 Lineup Projection for Cleveland State, under head coach Jack Effner. It was provided by a Viking wrestling insider.
125 – Look for incoming bluechip freshman Jordan Keller to start. From Wichita, Mr. Keller is a multi-time Kansas state champion, who, this past season, competing at 119 pounds, won not only the state title, but also the post-season NHSCA Tournament.
133 – Josh Palivoda, who started at this weight last year for the Vikings, returns. He is a sophomore from Raymond, Ohio, and a former Ohio state champ. This past season Palivoda’s highlights were a fourth-place finish at the 2008 EWL Tournaments and ten wins on the year.
141 – Our Viking source has Lawrence Cavello (Willard, OH) penciled in at this weight. Cavello is a former Ohio state place winner, with a high school career mark of 167-30, who redshirted this past season as a true freshman.
149 – Antonio Nicholson (SR/OH) aims to start at this weight for CSU in 2009. This past season Nicholson placed 4th in the Cleveland State Open and went 12-11 for 2008.
157 – Rob Michaels is one of the Vikings’ best young wrestlers. He’s a sophomore from Clyde, OH. This past season Michaels, competing at 157, placed sixth in the 2008 EWL Tournament, and completed the campaign at 23-12.
165 – Marcus Effner is one of CSU’s best veteran grapplers. He is a three-year starter (at 157 and 165) and three-time EWL place winner, out of Garfield Heights, Ohio. This past season Mr. Effner placed 4th in the Penn State Open, finished 5th in the EWL Tournament (getting a WC), competed (going 1-2) in the 2008 NCAA Tournament, and finished the year with a W/L of 27-13.
174 – JT Miller returns to start again at this weight. JT is a senior from Garfield Heights. Miller had a solid 2008 season, placing fifth at the EWL’s and completing the year at 22-18.
184 – DJ Cummins, a sophomore out of Morengo, Ohio, aims to start at this weight. Cummins started at 184 this past season as a freshman and racked up nine wins for the year.
197 – Alek Hughes (SO/OH) is the likely starter. Hughes co-started this past season for the Vikings at this weight as a true freshman, placed 3rd in the Ashland Open, 4th at the Cleveland State Open, and went 14-14 for the campaign.
285 – Senior Rashard Goff will man this weight. Goff is a nationally ranked heavy weight out of Brandon, Florida. Mr. Goff is a 3X EWL place winner (one time finalist), has competed in the NCAA Tournament three times, and has a cumulative W/L record the past three years of 72-48.
There is a brief look at Cleveland State for the coming season, and I wish Coach Effner and his Vikings a good 2009 and beyond. –Stove Pipe
