^^^F&M (the Diplomats) is a member of the EIWA. F&M’s head coach is Peter Schuyler, assisted by Mike Catullo. A Diplomat wrestling insider recently provided a 2009 lineup projection, and here it is:
125 – Our source expects Steven Sabreen to start at this weight for F&M the 2009 season. Sabreen is from Wexford, PA, and started for the Diplomats this past season up at 133 pounds, winning five bouts on the year.
133 – Jacob Bucha, a junior from Norristown, PA, has started the past two seasons at 125 pounds, Bucha is moving up to 133 for the coming season. His college career W/L mark is 30-17.
141 – Frank Higgins is penciled in at this weight. Higgins is an incoming freshman out of New Jersey.
149 – Veteran Al Gianforti will man this weight. He is a senior from Canandaigua, NY, who has started the past three years for the Diplomats at 141 and 149, and has a solid college career record of 46-34.
157 – Our F&M source says that James DiNicola will start at this weight.
165 – Anthony Bongarzone (SO/NJ), who started at 157 last year, is moving up to 165. This past season, as a true freshman, Mr. Bongarzone placed 6th in the November Navy Classic and won a total of nine bouts on the year.
174 – Justin Herbert is probably F&M’s best returning wrestler. This past season Herbert, a pinner, placed third in the Navy Classic, won the Wilkes Open, and placed sixth in the 2008 EIWA Tournament. Justin completed the campaign with a record of 27-5, including 17 pins! He’s a senior from New Milford, PA, and is ready for an even bigger 2009.
184 – Sophomore Dan Canfield returns at this weight. Canfield, a former Ohio state runnerup, won five bouts for the Diplomats in 2008.
197 – Incoming freshman Colin Ely aims to start at this weight. Ely is from Kennett Square, PA, and was a good 189 pounder for (I think) Unionville HS. Surname sound familiar? Colin’s dad is Keith Ely, a former Council Rock and Princeton University grappler.
285 – Nico Somers, one of the Diplomats’ best wrestlers, will man heavy weight. He is a senior from Green Village, NJ, and has started at 197 and 285 the past three seasons. Nico has placed at Mat-Town, the Navy Classic, and has won the Wilkes Open. His career record stands at a respectable 42-26.
There is a brief look at F&M’s projected starting lineup for the coming season, and I wish the Diplomats’ coaching staff and wrestlers a very good 2009 and beyond. –Stove Pipe
