^^^Brown University is coached by Dave Amato (head coach), assisted by Ed Gutnick, John Clark and Mike Burch. This past season Brown, in November through early December, placed 8th at the Oklahoma Gold Tournament (at Brockport), 7th at the Keystone Classic, and 35th at Vegas. The team soldiered through a tough 16-match dual-meet schedule, gaining seven wins, then in March grabbed 9th place (tallying 39 points) at the 2008 EIWA Tournament. One of the three Brown grapplers who qualified via the EIWA Tournament for the NCAA’s – Matt Gevelinger – returns, and should be a team leader this coming season.
I have not seen a Brown University wrestling release on its incoming freshman class, and a Brown insider has given WR.com staff a 2009 all-returnee lineup projection. I will first list the returnee lineup, then separately list the high school wrestlers, who I understand from net listings (mostly InterMat), plan to enroll at Brown. Here we go.
125 – Our Brown source lists Greg Einfrank and Mike Piccirillo as potential starters at this weight. Both are juniors out of the Empire State. The 2007 season Einfrank placed 6th in the Oklahoma Gold event, dnp at the EIWA’s, and completed the year at 13-17. This past season he placed 5th at the Oklahoma Gold tournament, then dislocated his elbow in the Keystone Classic, was out the remainder of the season, and completed his abbreviated 2008 campaign at 6-4. Piccirillo is a former New York state place winner, who has gotten about 16 matches under his belt the past two seasons.
133 – John Triggas is a senior from Moraga, CA. Triggas has spot started the past three seasons, highlighted by a sixth-place finish at the November 2007 Keystone Classic.
141 – Steve DeLorenzo (JR/NY). Steve is a former New York State runnerup (2006 for MacArthur HS), and has competed sporadically the past two seasons at Brown, logging a college career W/L record of about 9-11.
149 – Mark Bloom and Dave Foxen are listed. Bloom started for Brown this past season at this weight, placed 5th in the Oklahoma Gold Tournament, went 2-2 at Vegas, dnp at the 2008 EIWA’s, and completed the year at 11-18. From Geneva, NY, Bloom is a former NY state runnerup, who enrolled at Brown the fall semester of 2005 and lost that 2006 wrestling season to injury. I believe that Bloom has two more years of wrestling eligibility remaining. Dave Foxen is a sophomore out of Garden City, NY.
157 – Our Brown source lists two seniors at this weight – Tom Fazio (Ringwood, NJ) and Lenny Marandino (Redding, CA). This past season Fazio, starting at 157, placed 4th at the Keystone Classic, competed at Vegas, had an off-song (dnp) EIWA Tournament, and completed the 2008 campaign at 12-17, Mr. Marandino went 5-4 for the 2008 season.
165 – The 2008 starter at this weight Chris Musser returns. He’s a senior out of Vestal, NY. This past season Musser placed 4th in the Oklahoma Gold event, competed at Vegas, went 2-2 at the 2008 EIWA Tournament, and completed the year at 11-17.
174 – Bran Crudden (JR/CT) is listed by our source as the starter. Crudden has started and sport-started the past two seasons for Brown, and has a college career mark of 11-21.
184 – NCAA qualifier Matt Gevelinger (SR/WI) returns to man this weight. Gevelinger went 17-15 for 2007 at 184. This past season he went 2-2 at Vegas, placed 3rd at the 2008 EIWA Tournament, competed in the NCAA Tournament, and completed the year at 15-10.
197 – The 2008 starter at this weight, Brandon Stearns (SR/Edinboro, PA), returns. This past season Mr. Stearns placed 3rd at the Keystone Classic, went 1-2 at Vegas, dnp at the EIWA Tournament, and completed the 2008 campaign at 14-12.
285 – Look for Zack Zdrada to start. He’s a senior out of Atkinson, NH. This past season Zdrada spot started at hwt for Brown, placed 4th in the Keystone Classic and went 7-10 on the year.
This is a list of nine Brown University possible incoming freshman that I compiled from net sources, and I’m guessing at projected weights:
125 - T.J. Popolizio (Shenendehowa), who placed 2nd in the 2007 New York State Div I Tournament, competing at 112, then placed 6th in the 2008 NY Div I event, competing at 119 pounds.
133 - Grant Overcashier was a runnerup in a Michigan Regional tournament, competing at 130 pounds, and I believe was unable to compete in the finals of that event (injured?).
149 – Zack Kulczycki is from Illinois.
165 – Ziad Kharbush is from Livonia, MI, and placed 4th in the 2008 Michigan state tournament, competing at 160 pounds.
165 – Jeremy Epley placed 3rd in the 2008 Michigan state tournament, competing at 160.
165 – Jeff Lemmers, from Milwaukee, won the 2008 Wisconsin state tournament at 160.
184 – Ryan Drebin is from Palo Alto, CA.
197 – Malachy Morris is from McLean, VA.
That’s a look at Brown for this coming season, and I wish the Brown coaching staff and wrestlers the very best in 2009 and beyond. –Stove Pipe
