^^^Bucknell University’s head coach is Dan Wirnsberger, assisted by David Hoffman and Dustin Manotti. This past season the Bison soldiered through a difficult dual-meet schedule (winning eight meets), finished third in the 12-team Navy Classic, grabbed 8th place at the 2008 EIWA Tournament, and there qualified Dave Marble (133), Andy Rendos (165) and Shane Riccio (174) for the NCAA’s. All three of Bucknell’s 2008 NCAA qualifiers are back, along with numerous returnees. Further, the Bison had a good recruiting year and are expected to have a very good 2009 season – stronger in both dual meets and tournament competition.
A Bison wrestling insider provided WR.com staff with Bucknell’s projected starting lineup for 2009. Here it is.
125 – Our Bucknell source lists incoming freshman, Derek Reber, as the starter. From Lewisburg, Reber is a bluechipper who won the 2008 PIAA AA crown and also placed second in the April 2008 NHSCA Tournament, competing at 130 pounds.
133 – Veteran David Marble (JR/Harpursville, NY) will man this weight. Mr. Marble has started for the Bison the past two seasons at 133, and is a two-time NCAA qualifier. The 2007 season he won the Millersville Hitchcock event, placed 6th in the EIWA Tournament (getting a Wild Card), competed in the NCAA’s, and completed his true freshman year at 24-13. This past season Marble won the November Navy Classic, was 2008 EIWA runnerup, went 1-2 at the NCAA Tournament, and completed the campaign at 27-9. In April of this year David placed second in the FILA Junior Freestyle tournament, competing at 60 kg. Marble is capable of having a huge 2009.
141 – The likely starter at this weight is junior Luke Chohany (Susquenita HS), from the town of Duncannon, PA, which is down the Susquehanna River from Lewisburg. Chohany started for the Bison at this weight last season, and, although not placing in the 2008 EIWA’s (went 1-2), did complete the year with a solid W/L record of 20-14.
149 – Kevin LeValley aims to start again at this weight. LeValley is a sophomore from Limon, CO, who won the Colorado states four times and also is an accomplished freestyle and Greco wrestler. I think Kevin is a two-time Fargo All-American in both styles, high-lighted by his winning the Fargo Greco title in July of 2007.
This past season, starting for the Bison as a true freshman, Mr. LeValley placed 4th at the Navy Classic, wrestled well in dual meets, went 2-2 at the 2008 EIWA Tournament (but dnp), and completed the year at 22-14. After the college season was over, Kevin placed second in the FILA Junior freestyle event, competing at 145.5 pounds. LeValley is ready for a break-out 2009.
157 - Returning starter Brantley Hooks (JR/Spartanburg, SC) has the inside track to start at 157 this coming season. Hooks has started at this weight the past two seasons for the Bison, and has a career record of 29-25. Mr. Hooks is now ready to place in the EIWA’s and to compete in the NCAA’s.
165 – Andy Rendos (JR/Brockway, PA) is one of Bucknell’s best wrestlers. Andy is a two-time PIAA champ, two-time Navy Classic winner, two-time EIWA placer, and a two-time NCAA qualifier. His two-year college career record is 55-17. Rendos could have a huge 2009.
174 – Shane Riccio (JR/Warren, NJ) will start at this weight. Riccio has started at 174 the past two seasons for Bucknell, going 17-11 for 2007. Then, this past season, Shane had a better year, placing 4th at the early season Navy Classic, 5th at the EIWA Tournament, got a Wild Card and competed in the 2008 NCAA’s, and finished up at 25-11.
184 – The two guys in the battle to start (or co-start) at this weight are sophomores David Thompson (OH) and Rob Waltko (PA). Mr. Thompson started at this weight the 2008 season for the Bison, placing 3rd at the Navy Classic, going 1-2 at the 2008 EIWA’s, and completing his true freshman year at 17-13.
Rob Waltko is a former PIAA AAA champion (North Allegheny HS), who spot started this past season at 174 pounds, racking up a W/L of 11-12. Who wants it?
197 – This was a problem weight for the Bisons this past season. The probably starter for the coming year is incoming freshman Nate Jones, out of Sidney, OH. This past season Mr. Jones won the Ohio state tournament, competing at 189 pounds for Troy Christian. Nate has the potential to start and win college bouts right out of the chute.
285 – Our Bison source says that William McCormick is the probably starter at heavy weight for 2009. McCormick is a third-year sophomore (eligibility-wise), who won the 2006 Wisconsin state tournament his senior year of high school, competing at 275 pounds. Mr. McCormick then enrolled at Brown University the summer of 2006, but tore his ACL and did not compete that 2007 wrestling season for Brown.
McCormick then transferred to Bucknell, and, this past season, saw limited action, going 6-7 for 2008. He’s ready to step up and start.
There is a look at Bucknell’s projected starting lineup for the coming season, and I wish Coaches Wirnsberger, Hoffman and Manotti, and all the Bison wrestlers a good 2009 and beyond. –Stove Pipe
