I've added a section for season ending awards, first of all going conference by conference. Each evening I will add another, ending with something for the entire NCAA. First off is the CAA...
Freshman of the Year: James Nicholson (Old Dominion) 125 LBS
Nicholson finished his freshman season as an All-American, placing 8th at the NCAA Tournament. The 125lber from Des Moines, Iowa was Old Dominion’s first All-American in thirteen years. Prior to the NCAA Tournament, Nicholson won a CAA Conference title with a 2-1 decision over two-time CAA champion Dave Tomasette of Hofstra. The victory was Nicholson’s third of the season over Tomasette. In order to achieve All-American honors Nicholson defeated the number 7 seed Michael Sees of Bloomsburg in the second round (8-2) and later the number 9 seed Rollie Peterkin of Penn in the round of 12 (5-3).
Honorable Mention: Cayle Byers (George Mason) 197LBS
Coach of the Year: Steve Martin (Old Dominion)
In his fourth season at the helm for the Monarchs, Martin led ODU to a runner-up finish in the CAA tournament. Six of Martin’s wrestlers qualified for the NCAA tournament, all of them will return in 2008-09. The team tied for 35th place at the NCAA tournament, and was led by James Nicholson, Martin’s first All-American. The Monarchs dual record was 17-3; 6-1 in the CAA. The seventeen wins were the second most in team history.
Wrestler of the Year: Charles Griffin (Hofstra) 141 LBS
Charles Griffin finished his senior season the same way he finished in junior campaign, with a 3rd place finish at the NCAA Tournament, defeating Oklahoma State’s Nathan Morgan both times. Griffin the NCAA’s #2 seed finished the year 31-4 and defeated eventual NCAA Champion, J Jaggers of Ohio State, early in the season. Although Griffin was upset in this years CAA finals by Ryan Williams of ODU, he finished his career as a three-time CAA Champion.
Honorable Mention: Alton Lucas (Hofstra) 174 LBS
These as well as the next ones will be posted at....
