I have read many posts, with chagrin, here and on inferior sites about the cost of a true National Wrestling championship that includes every college wrestler who qualifies to compete. From what I know of the wrestling community, and that is substantial, I think that if your kid made it, you would pay the ticket or a local club would sponsor him. The price thing is real. The issue of getting the money is not. Maybe if it gained enough notoriety we could save wrestling by wresting the championships from the NC(NBA&NFL) AAs Why in hell doesn't some deep pocket guy stand up for this idea. How many reading here think that a real event could not be promoted.? Maybe some sharp cookie like Steve Smith or Jack Roller could put this together. I wish I had the cash and expertise to get this off the ground. Like most who have college age wrestlers, I have spent thousands on wrestling to date. Do you really think any of us wouldn't pay 1000 dollars to see our kid wrestler for a National title? Ever been to the remote reaches of Fargo on a hot siummer day? What college coach wouldn't bring his qualifiers to an event like that say April 2nd if the opportunity and rule book allowed it and moms or dads would foot the freight? This is very doable. It just takes a knowledgeable guy with great contacts and experience in wrestling.

I am not sure of what you are asking for in your post - but so far - for us (family of 4) - NCAA's is costing $3000 not including water or food at the tournament (or anything in Missouri at all). But, I wouldn't miss my son/family member/HS teammate - wrestling in the NCAA's. Forget about what I have spent on traveling/tournament fees/hotels/air fare/wrestling clubs/etc. in my years of being involved in wrestling. I also wish I had the cash and expertise to get people with "deep pockets" to sponser college wrestling. What needs to be done??? I would be willing to help.

I wish i knew enough to answer your question but i don't. Nevertheless you help confirm my point. If most wrestlers parents had to pay to allow their kid to wrestle at an event like NCAAs they would find a way. Whenever having a larger, better event with more competitors comes up for discussion one of the first and loudest retorts is: the NCAA wouldn't stand for it. Next is: it cost too much money. Do you think that many less people would go to NCAAs if it cost 3 or 4 times as much for tickets, if the money went to wrestling? I sure don't!! I also am certain that if all the other Div. champs were competing and a few alternates the attendance would actually increase and more than pay the cost of the added arena size and sundry other costs. Another frequently mentioned problem is: most of the coaches would not be up for 4 days in a gym for such an event. I just read that over on themat. Few of the guys I know would mind. in fact most would relish the opportunity. The big problem is the "it'll never work" attitude and the lack of the charismatic leader to move all us wrestling friendly people. Like you said it costs you over $3K to go for 4. Would tix costing 2X as much deter you? One of the issues with the "guys, who work in wrestling" is they aren' t being paid properly and their programs are starving for cash. This makes their money prism out of focus relative to the real world. I'm no advocate for spendng more of my money but the wrestling communty is not on poverty row to the extent that many of its programs are, in my opinion. It is a travesty what most coaches are being paid in the college ranks. There are many HS coaches making more money.
