Hasn't been really discussed much here......I'll go down by weight class. Feel free to add someone I've missed....
125
James Nicholson (Old Dominion) RS Fresh
16th. Nicholson had won a lot of big matches already, twice beating conference foe Dave Tomasette, a guy who has been ranked in the top ten at times this season. Nicholson can win a CAA title this year, but he also has to deal with Tomasette again and Drexel's Mytych.
Notable Wins: Tomasette (x2), Gitomer, Bedelyon, Staylor
Boris Novachkov (Cal Poly) True Fresh
17th. Boris has a shot at the runner-up spot to Tanner Gardner in the PAC-10, provided he is healthy.
Notable Wins: Triggas, Kinney, Robles Forshey and Orozco.
Nic Bedelyon (Kent State) True Fresh
18th. Nic forced his way onto my radar pinning former EWL champ Mike Sees in his first collegiate competition. He has a shot at winning the MAC, and an very outside shot of being Kent State's first AA in a long time with a big weekend in St. Louis.
Other notable wins: G. Flores and Triggas.
Anthony Robles (Arizona State) RS Fresh
19th. Robles is an incredible story. Just to being able to wrestle should be an accomplishment for him, much less being ranked in the top 20. Novachkov will be his main competition for the #2 spot in the PAC-10.
Notable wins: Maldanado, Nicholson, Martinez, Fio and Zoetewey.
Tyler Clark (Iowa State) True Fresh
21st. He earned a permanent spot in the ISU lineup a few weeks ago, but he looks like he will stay. Clark most likely will be able to earn a trip to the NCAA's, from the always diffcult "Big 5".
Notable wins are: L. Smith, Cudd, Fio, Borshoff
133
Mike Grey (Cornell) True Fresh (sort of)
2nd. After starting the year sort of slow, Grey has been on a tear as of last. He is definitely in the National Title hunt. Grey has 5 losses on the season, and has already avenged two of them.
Notable Wins: Slaton, Ruggirello (x2), Tanelli, Mitcheff, Marble, F. Novachkov, Beebe
141
Kellen Russell (Michigan) True Fresh
5th. Russell has already spent a few weeks occupying the number one spot. While he has come back down to Earth since then, Russell is still on the short list of guys who can come home with an NCAA title. His postseason points make Michigan very dangerous.
Notable Wins: Headlee, Tirapelle, Griffin, Jaggers, Lashaway, LeClere, Rivera, Prater
Garrett Scott (Penn State) True Fresh (sort of)
11th. Penn State has a good problem to have. Returning AA Strayer moved up to 141, only to be beaten by teammate Garrett Scott (and others). Scott is very dangerous, if in fact, he is the guy starting for the Nittany Lions in the postseason.
Notable Wins: Strayer, Kyler, Gallick, Prater
Ryan Prater (Illinois) True Fresh
18th. Ryan has done admirably filling in for an injured Troy Tirapelle. Due to the depth of the Big 11 Prater will need a good weekend in Minnesota to qualify for NCAA's.
Notable Wins: Lashaway, R. Williams, Harner
Zach Bailey (Oklahoma) RS Fresh
22nd. Bailey had a hot start to the season. Winning 21 of 23 matches and making the Midlands final. Since then he has cooled off big time, he will have to battle just to qualify for NCAA's.
Notable Wins: Lashaway, Adamcsik, R. Williams, Sulzer, Downing
Keith Sulzer (Northwestern) RS Fresh
24th. Sulzer was going along his season unnoticed until last week. Two upsets over Strayer and LeClere will get you noticed. It remains to been seen whether or not he can Keep winning. If so, Northwestern is even tougher in the postseason.
Notable Wins: LeClere, Strayer
149
Adam Hall (Boise State) RS Fresh
20th. Adam has 5 losses on the season, all coming to opponents ranked in the top 11. Two of which came to conference opponent Morgan Atkinson, one in OT. Hall certainly will contend for the PAC-10 Championship. AA'in isn't totally out of the picture, but 149 is stacked.
Notable Wins: Baxter (x2), Ervin, J. Doyle
Grant Paswell (Illinois) True Fresh
23rd. Entering this season 149 looked like a hole for the Illini. Paswell has stepped up to grab the starting spot and not looked back. The Big 11 is brutal at 149 so Paswell may need to pull an upset or two or hope for a wild card in order to qualify for NCAA's.
Notable Wins: K. Larson, Saddoris, Hurley
Kurt Kinser (Indiana) RS Fresh
25th. Kinser has emerged as the guy for the Hooisers at 149 after an early season battle with Nick Walpole. Kinser has proven to be one of the most prolific pinners in D1 Wrestling. Only Jayson Ness has as many pins. Kinser is in the same situation as Paswell, concering qualifying for Nationals.
Notable Wins: Cocozzo, Wagner, Frey, post-grad Aaron Martin.
157
None ranked in D1CW's top 25.
165---Toughest for Freshman in 2008.
Mack Lewnes (Cornell) True Fresh (sort of)
4th. Great season so far for Mack. Tournament Wins at the Body Bar, Southern Scuffle and Reno. He is the favorite in a tough EIWA field, and will be a title contender for years to come.
Notable Wins: Dieffenbach, Stewart, Safratowich, J. King, Chaires, Coughlin
Jon Reader (Iowa State) RS Fresh
5th. He was the guy who I thought would place highest out of all freshman. Reader has a chance of placing high at NCAA's. His conference is loaded though, all five guys are in the top 20. Reader could end up anywhere from 1-5.
Notable Wins: Stewart, Fay, Marella
Colt Sponseller (Ohio State) True Fresh
9th. One of my favorite guys to watch. He wrestles the entire match, seemingly getting stronger as the match progresses. Colt misses the early portion of the year with an injury, but has yet to lose a match. His match this week with Tannenbaum will show just how ready Sponseller is to being a contender.
Notable Wins: Gross, Marella, Coughlin, Fraga
Michael Chaires (Virginia) True Fresh
25th. Chaires has had some of the typical up's and down's like most freshman. He had a great showing at the Southern Scuffle finishing as the runner-up. Chaires has his work cut out for him as far as qualifiying for NCAA's goes. Conference foe Keegan Mueller majored him in their last meeting and wild cards will be hard to come by in the ACC.
Notable Wins: Glasser, Swartz, Rella
174
Jeff James (Oklahoma) RS Fresh
23rd. James, like teammate Zach Bailey started strong and has taken his lumps lately. He's another guy who is looking up at the Big 5 rankings with 4 guys ahead of him.
Notable Wins: J. Peterson
Chris Henrich (Virginia) True Fresh
25th. Henrich just appeared in the rankings two weeks ago and is in the mist of an 11 match winning streak. He recently defeated conference rival Eric Decker a 2007 NCAA qualifier. Another win vs Decker at the ACC tournament could earn him a wild card berth to the NCAA's.
Notable Wins: Giffin, Pullano, Decker
184
Kirk Smith (Boise State) True Fresh
8th Smith's big performance at the Southern Scuffle led to him being pulled out of redshirt. An early season loss to Phil Keddy, which Smith will try to avenge this week is the only blemish on his record. Smith looks to be the best in a tough PAC-10 weight class. He has the potential to AA this year.
Notable Wins: Haines, Goodman, Caponi, I. Murphy, Geisen
Chris Honeycutt (Edinboro) True Fresh
17th Honeycutt showed that he is for real at the Southern Scuffle with a 3rd place finish. He will be a frontrunner for an EWL championship this year.
Notable Wins: Haines, Chine, Goodman
Brent Chriswell (Arizona State) RS Fresh
18th. The Purdue transfer has quietly put together a solid freshman campaign. He is one of four or five guys who potentially could win the PAC-10 title.
Notable Wins: Umbehauer, Zamir, Bressler
AJ Kissel (Purdue) True Freshman
24th. Kissel's success has been one of the bright spots in an otherwise rough season for the Boilermakers. Kissel is 2nd on the Purdue team in wins and tied for fourth in the nation in pins. 184 is quite deep in the Big 11 so Kissel needs to win a few matches at the conference tournament to ensure he competes in the NCAA tournament.
Notable Wins: Spellman, Brenner
197
Anthony Biondo (Michigan) RS Fresh
18th. Biondo has been a plesant suprise for UM. He has been out of action lately, but if healthy he can potentially place in the middle of the pack in the Big 11.
Notable Wins: B. Jones, Burns
Logan Brown (Purdue) RS Fresh
19th. Brown had a successful off-season wrestling freestyle and its carried over into his rookie season. Brown will has a good shot at qualifying for the NCAA's.
Notable Wins: B. Jones
Cayle Byers (George Mason) True Fresh
21st. And rising. The newest rankings don't take into consideration his latest victory over Burns of UNC-G. The Alaskan has not missed a beat going cross-country for school at GMU and competing right off the bat. Byers had gotten stronger as this season has progressed.
Notable Wins: Mendoza, TJ Morrison, Burns
285
Charlie Alexander (Oregon) RS Fresh
23rd. Nice to see an Oregon guy excelling in what is supposed to be their final season. Alexander is one of maybe 4 heavyweights who can compete for second place in the PAC-10.
Notable Wins: Hopkin, T Gardner,
