The Lineup thread and confusion about Lou Ruggirello may me think that we need a post like this. It is by no means set in stone that these guys will redshirt, but there is a chance. They have a RS option available and have at least discussed the possiblity....
125-Brandon Precin (Northwestern) 125-Brian Owen (Boise State) 125-Tyler Clark (Iowa) 133-Lou Ruggirello (Hofstra) 141-Ryan Prater (Illinois) 149-Darrion Caldwell (NC State) 149-Torsten Gillespie (Edinboro) 149-Mitch Polkowske (Northern Colorado)---Actually an LDS Mission, Not RS 157-Jason Welch (Northwestern) 157-Scott Winston (Rutgers) 157-Jedd Moore (Virginia) 157-Ben Jordan (Wisconsin) 174-Quentin Wright (Penn State) 184-AJ Kissel (Purdue) 184-Chris Honeycutt (Edinboro) 285-David Marone (Virginia Tech)

^^^Here are some other RS possibilities for the coming season, involving Div I wrestlers competing for teams in the east/south -
Derek Reber/Bucknell - Earlier this off season there was talk around the Bison grazing field that, if Reber didn't look like he could cert down at 125 anymore, that he might take the year off, which is the Bucknell equivalent of redshirting. Reber is from the town of Lewisburg, which would make his being out of school, but in the Bucknell wrestling room quite easy. I guess we wont know the outcome of that possibility until late August registration.
Tyler Sim or Richard Alacron - The Citadel likely will redshirt one of their two cracker-jack 125 pounders, Sim or Alacron. From what I understand, both could compete unattached in a number of open tournaments in the fall, which would give The Citadel's coaching staff until into December to decide which of the two would stay out of competition the whole season and redshirt.
Keith Koziel - I'm hearing from southern wrestling fans that The Citadel's 157 pounder Keith Kozel (Brandon, FL) is a likely redshirt this coming season, and that native North Carolinean, Justin Sparrow can't cut to 149 anymore and would go 157 the 2010 season.
Corey Jantzen - Huge news out of Harvard is that Corey Jantzen is sitting out 2010, and apparently will be spending some time freestyling at the OTC.
Jordan Enck - I understand that Jordan Enck doesn't plan to wrestle at Hofstra the coming season and beyond. If Enck were to not wrestle the 2010, then decide to return to the mat, say for the 2011 season, then I'd suppose that 2010 could be called his redshirt year.
Nic Bendelyon/Kent State - I did hear the possibility that Nic Bendelyon might RS the 2010 season and Troy Opfer/Steve Mitcheff would handle 125. Keep in mind that Dan Mitcheff will be a senior this coming season at 133 for Kent State. Then, come 2011, Nic Bendelyon will be moving up to compete at 133. Obviously no final decision on whether Nic Bendelyon has been made yet.
Chris Albright/Pitt - Pitt coaching staff told me that Chris Albright is too big to cert at 125 anymore, and with veterans Jimmy Conroy and Eric Albright both aiming at 133, it is a perfect year for young Chris Albright to take a redshirt.
Keith Dobish/Rutgers - I assume that Keith Dobish will either help out at 184 in 2010 and complete his college career, or, if he's not in the mix competing, he could RS.
Virginia Tech's Jesse Dong and Peter Yates likely will both cert at 157 this season, and, from what I understood earlier this off season, that one would start and the other could take a RS year. Now I defer to Earl, if he recently has been told differently. Now that I done said that, I guess I better hit "Post Reply" and mosey on over to Earl "Lineups" section and ck out the Hokies. -Stove Pipe

Stove,
As per Virginia Tech. I was given the lineup, in which my source has left out the true freshman on purpose. I was also told that the freshman WILL make an impact. So, it would be safe to say that this particular lineup is a "safe guess" for now, and will be sorted out after the intersquad match.

EARL, Thanks! My one comment would be that Yates was having trouble making weight sometimes last season - I think he missed weight mid Jan 2009 for the Rutgers' dual meet. I wouldn't really be suprised if Yates certed at 157 this coming fall. If Yates does suck to 149, we shall see how he performs. Danged if I know, -Stove Pipe

The redshirt theory doesn't work and how many wrestler's that did redshirt could have really used it when it counted???
P.S. Holding an individual back for competition or educational reasons is not acceptable in my opinion...If not 100% then I'm game!!!

In football, players are allowed to grey shirt, then red shirt. Is this also allowed in wrestling as well?

^^^Idaho, I'd much rather argue about the NCAA rules than read them. My understanding for Div I wrestling, is that, after the NCAA "clock" starts to run, you have 5 years to use 4 years of wrestling eligibility.
Now, if a wrestler graduates from high school, then decides to work out the next season, or whatever, and does NOT enroll at college that has wrestling - or enrolls part-time and only takes a minimum credit load - his clock would not start running.
So, if a wrestled graduated from high school, took the next year working out at a wrestling club and doesn't enroll in college, then the following year enrolls full time at a Div I wrestling school for the fall semester; then his NCAA clock would not have started until the start of that fall semester. -Stove Pipe
P.S. Of course, as you know, a wrestler can interrupt the 5-year clock by going into the service or on a mission, etc. The legendary Wayne Baughman used to say, "College wrestling is whatever the rules say it is."

Boise State's Randy Larson was "grey-shirted" last season. In wrestling I believe it's different from football tho as football is (for the most part) a one semester sport whereas wrestling overlaps both the fall and spring semesters. So if one were to "grey-shirt" for wrestling he would, I suppose, have to attend his college of choice on a part-time basis (8 credit hours or less I believe) for two semesters - or as Stovepipe said, not attend college for that year at all.
Greyshirts also can not work out with the COLLEGE team that they are being greyshirted for - however they can work out with CLUB teams. In the case of Boise State that would be the Bronco Wrestling CLUB. With Oregon State it would be the Orange Crush wrestling CLUB. Larson did that this past spring - wrestled and worked out with the Bronco Wrestling CLUB.
P.S. As far as I know Brian Owen won't be redshirted next season. They will need him and Alan Bartelli both at 125 lbs next season.

Is Boise going to redshirt Kirk Smith this year? I hope his injury is healed up! He is a tough kid and I am hoping he is alright.
