The smoke has cleared and Ohio State has won their first NCAA Championship in the sport of wrestling. I received a bunch of positive feedback about my pre-NCAA Obscure Facts/Stats/Trends, so here is another one. Some of the information may not be quite as obscure, but either way here we go.....
--In 2015, Ohio State won a National Championship in Football and Wrestling. The last team to accomplish a similar feat was the Oklahoma Sooners in 1974, who won their National Championship in Football during the 1974 season and wrestling in 1973-74.
--Ohio State had three Freshman placing top three (Nathan Tomasello 1st, Kyle Snyder 2nd, Bo Jordan 3rd). This is a mark that has not been accomplished in the 2000's. Penn State twice had two top three Freshman finishers in 2011 (David Taylor 2nd/Ed Ruth 3rd) and 2012 (Nico Megaludis 2nd/Dylan Alton). No other team has even done it twice.
--This season, Virginia Tech's football and wrestling teams both gave Ohio State a regular season loss.
--Thirteen wrestlers at the 2015 NCAA Championships finished their careers as 3x All-Americans. This number is the highest in at least 22 seasons. The only year close to matching thirteen is twelve by the incredible class of 2010.
--In my pre NCAA stats, I mentioned how there is a possibility that we could have 4 4x All-American's that never won an NCAA Title. That came to fruition as James Green, Dylan Ness, Logan Storley and Mike McMullan all became 4x AA's, but never were champions. This has not happened before in one season.
--Graham High School in St. Paris, Ohio qualified five wrestlers for the 2015 NCAA Championships. Four of them, Ryan Taylor, Nick Brascetta, Bo Jordan and Isaac Jordan were All-American's. The five (Max Thomusseit is the other) accounted for 52 team points, which would have been good enough for 12th place as a team.
--Nathan Tomasello's NCAA title at 125lbs has shown a bit of a trend at 125. For the past four seasons, the NCAA Champion has been the Big Ten Champion (Matt McDonough 2012, Jesse Delgado 2013/14).
--Zeke Moisey became the first unseeded NCAA finalist since Carl Fronhofer of Pittsburgh in 2003.
--In other Moisey/West Virginia news..He became the schools first All-American since Brandon Rader in 2007, the first finalist since Greg Jones in 2005 and the first WVU Freshman finalist since Jones in 2002.
--Tomasello and Moisey were Freshman finalists at 125. The last time a pair of Freshman faced off in the NCAA Finals it was Iowa's Matt McDonough vs Iowa State's Andrew Long in 2010.
--Virginia Tech's Joey Dance defeated both NCAA Finalist's this season at 125 lbs. The only other wrestler in the country who can claim the same...his teammate Zach Epperly. In dual meet action Epperly defeated both Matt Brown and Tyler Wilps. No other wrestlers at any weight did this.
--Cody Brewer and Drake Houdashelt were NCAA Champions who hail from Missouri. Two Missouri natives have not won NCAA Titles in the same season in the 2000's.
--Cody Brewer won his title as a 13 seed. It is the lowest seed ever to win an NCAA Title (this is only the second year w/ 16 seeds). Jarrod King had previously won as a 12 seed in 2009.
--Three of Brewer's victories came against top four seeds (#1 Chris Dardanes, #3 Cory Clark, #4 Johnni DiJulius)
--Logan Stieber joins Pat Smith as the only 4x NCAA Champions who were members of an NCAA Championship team. Smith did so in 1990 and 1994.
--NC State's Kevin Jack finished 5th at 141lbs. Jack did not even break into the Wolfpack dual lineup until February 14th against Pittsburgh
--Jack is the first Connecticut native to earn All-American honors since Orville Palmer finished 7th for Oklahoma in 2000.
--Chris Mecate and Lenny Richardson were the first pair of Old Dominion wrestlers to earn All-American honors in the same season since Pete Horst and Nick Garone did so in 1991.
--Anthony Ashnault's 8th place finish for Rutgers gave the school All-American's in back to back years for the first time in school history.
--149 continued the trend I pointed out prior to the NCAA Championships. Big Ten Wrestlers have won the title in even numbered years since 2006 (Schlatter, Metcalf, Metcalf, Molinaro, Tsirtsis). In odd years it has rotated between conferences without repeating. (Gillespie/EWL, Caldwell/ACC, Dake/EIWA, Oliver/Big 12, Drake Houdashelt/MAC).
--BJ Clagon finished 5th at 149 for Rider. He is the first Bronco to earn All-American honors since Doug Umbehauer in 2009. He is also their first Freshman AA.
--David Habat, Clagon and Dan Neff were All-Americans at 149 and competed in the EWL. The last time three EWL wrestlers earned All-American honors in the same season, at the same weight class was in 1997 at 177lbs when John Koss 6th from West Virginia, Jim Straight 7th from Edinboro, and Mike Geurin 8th from Lock Haven did so.
--Isaiah Martinez was the first Freshman to post an undefeated season since Cael Sanderson in 1999.
--Dylan Ness finished as a four-time All-American with placements of 6th, 2nd, 4th, 2nd. Therefore he lost the last match of every season he competed. The only other 4x All-American's who have done this since 1997 are Ben Bennett (4th, 6th, 8th, 6th), Lance Palmer (2nd, 4th, 8th, 4th), and Eric Tannenbaum (2nd, 4th, 6th, 4th).
--For the sixth consecutive season the number one seed prevailed in undefeated fashion at 165lbs. Alex Dieringer was preceded by David Taylor, Kyle Dake, David Taylor, Jordan Burroughs and Andrew Howe. It also should be noted that the last four have won the Hodge Trophy. With this being Logan Stieber's Senior season it's doubtful that Dieringer would win, but in my opinion he's a very close second.
--Taylor Walsh became the first Indiana Hoosier since 2008 (Angel Escobedo) to make the NCAA Finals.
--Matt Brown extended Penn State's streak for producing at least one NCAA Champion per season since 2011. (2011/Wright, 2012/Molinaro, Taylor, Ruth, 2013/Ruth, Wright, 2014/Taylor, Ruth, 2015/Brown) This is the longest active streak by any team.
--Brown was also the first Utah native to win an NCAA Title since his coach Cael Sanderson did so in 2002. Cael's Iowa State teammate Aaron Holker was also a Utah native who won a title in 2002.
--South Dakota's Robert Kokesh and Logan Storley finished third and fourth, respectively at 174. Over their career they have combined to All-American seven times. Since 2000 only four other South Dakota natives have combined to All-American six times. (BJ Padden x2, Eric Hauan x2, Corey Wallman, Brock Lesnar).
--North Dakota State's pair of All-American's Kurtis Julson and Hayden Zillmer are the first pair of All-American's in the same season for NDSU.
--As mentioned above Julson and Zillmer made it onto the podium for North Dakota State. Both are from Minnesota. This was the first time since 2001 that there were multiple All-American's from Minnesota, that did not wrestle for the Golden Gophers. The wrestlers from 2001 were Pat McNamara of Michigan State and Eric Schmiesing of Hofstra. Moral is, that if there are studs from Minnesota, they generally stay home.
--The 184lb final between Gabe Dean of Cornell and Nathaniel Brown of Lehigh was the first All-EIWA NCAA Final since Lehigh's Zach Rey beat Ryan Flores of American in 2011.
--The 184 weight class proved to be the most widespread as far as All-American's from various conferences. Wrestlers from six different conferences made it on to the podium at 184. (2 EIWA, 2 Big Ten, 1 EWL, 1 Pac 12, 1 WWC, 1 MAC)
--Edinboro's Vic Avery finished third at 184. He is from Massachusetts and the last Massachusetts wrestler to become an All-American was Navy's Matt Stolpinski in 2007 and 2008.
--Nebraska's TJ Dudley was the 8th placer at 184. He is the only South Carolina native to All-American in the 2000's.
--Michigan's Domenic Abounader was the only Big Ten Champion that did not earn All-American honors. In fact, the last Big Ten Champion to miss out on AA'ing in the same season was Illinois' Mario Gonzalez in 2012.
--Davidson Senior Scott Patrick became the first Wildcat wrestler to win two matches at the NCAA Championships. He's actually the first Davdison grappler to win a match at National's since 1968. In the opening round he knocked off Big Ten Runner-Up Brett Pfarr the #11 seed.
--Kyven Gadson won a title for Iowa State, the first since Jon Reader did it in 2011. Out of all of the eventual winners schools, they had the longest gap in between titles.
--Seeds held up the best in terms of making it to become All-American's at 197. Seeds 1-6 all got onto the podium, as did #8. Conner Hartmann at #10 was the only seed lower than 8 to AA.
--Nick Gwiazdowski's NCAA Championship extended the longest active streak of producing a National Champion by one home state. Since 2009 at least one New Yorker has won an NCAA Title (2009/Nickerson, 2010/Dake, O'Connor, 2011/Dake, 2012/Dake, 2013/Dake, 2014/Gwiazdowski, 2015/Gwiazdowski).
--Gwiazdowski also became the first Multi-Time NCAA Champion for NC State and the first for the ACC since TJ Jaworsky of North Carolina in 1995.
--The only True Freshman that All-American'ed were Zeke Moisey, Kevin Jack and Kyle Snyder.
--Pennsylvania did not produce an NCAA Champion for the first time since 2010.
--New Jersey is on an NCAA Champion drought of three seasons. Prior to 2012, 2002 and 2008 were the only seasons without a NCAA Title by a New Jersey native.
--In 2015, Ohio State won a National Championship in Football and Wrestling. The last team to accomplish a similar feat was the Oklahoma Sooners in 1974, who won their National Championship in Football during the 1974 season and wrestling in 1973-74.
