Recap of the duel meet.
Great crowd. The Iowa State fans, including myself, were certainly most into it. Very energetic, loud and enthusiastic crowd. Made the wrestling matches fun.
125 - Larson could have had a huge upset over Klimara if he would have chosen to wrestle in the third period. He instead froze up and allowed Klimara to make a come back, to win 8-7.
133 - Hall had one of the nicest throws I have ever seen. It is very apparent that he wrestled a ton of freestyle growing up as his arsenal of maneuvers is unbelievable.
141 - Rodriguez was simply outclassed and it showed.
149 - Disappointed that Kindig didn't wrestle, but Dolan gave Moreno a good match.
157 - Goettl either has no offense or he refuses to show it. Here's a guy with some big wins in his career, that did nothing out on the mat.
165 - Dieringer is one of the best wrestlers in DI right now. Props to him showing a lot of class and sportsmanship in the match as he accidentally poked Moreno in the eye. He backed off and then said he was sorry about the eye poke as he and Moreno quickly shook hands again before restarting the match.
174- Weatherman also had zero offense out on the mat against Crutchmer. Here's a guy with some major wins and two Round of 12 finishes and he looked like a backup out on the mat. I do not get why he was so afraid to shoot.
184- I was extremely impressed with Weatherspoon. He wrestled a very tactical, methodical match and took it straight to Boyd. I really thought with other results from this season that Boyd would mop the floor with Weatherspoon. Boy was I wrong. Weatherspoon looked great out there on the mat.
197 - Luke Bean will eventually develop into a great wrestler once he develops any offense. At the current time he is all defense and counters. He was giving Gadson fits until Gadson got angry, locked up a throw and sent him sailing halfway across the mat.
HWT - Adam Marsden is the king of stalling. If the NCAA gives out a stalling award, Austin Marsden will be the winner. On the same hand, I do not get Quean Smith at all. I'm not sure if he was afraid of having a big win over a ranked opponent or what, but he froze out on the mat. He d**n near takes Marsden down at the beginning of the match and then loses in on a scramble that could have gone either way. In the third period he has a beautiful takedown, but then never shoots the rest of the match! AH it was frustrating as a fan to watch.
My overall opinion is that the Cyclone wrestlers seemed to be afraid of the Cowboy wrestlers, with exception to Weatherspoon and Michael Moreno. I don't count Hall, Gabe Moreno or Gadson because they should have won their matches and did. Even though Moreno lost 13-3, he still did not back down to Dieringer. It's just that Dieringer is that good. As for Larson, Goettl, Weatherman and Smith they had way, way too much respect for their opponents. It was like they were afraid to try anything out there on the mat. As if they were afraid of winning, as strange as that sounds.
This is a duel meet that by all means, Iowa State should have won.
