125 - Two years ago Appalachian State's Dominic Parisi came out of nowhere into the NCAA's to defeat both Tyler Cox of Wyoming and Jarrod Garnett of Virginia Tech, (both of which went on to make All American) in route to the Quarter-finals. Since then he has fallen off the radar and not been talked about much sense. With the vast amount of individuals who could make their way onto the award stand in St. Louis, Parisi is among them. Look for him to easily take the SOCON title.
133 - Another wrestler that could possibly be much more dangerous than initially anticipated is Tennessee-Chattanooga's master of the upset, Nick Soto, who has proven his capabilities to win big matches on more than one occasion. He took should win the SOCON title with relative ease.
141 - 141 will be a rather interesting weight in the SOCON as we wrestling fans are always in question concerning the eligibility of Ugi Khishignyam. Was he a sophomore last season or a senior? It seems everyone "knows" but know one really knows for sure. If he has this year left or another two, it's up in the air for how much of an effect he'll have on the weight class. The Khishignyam of two years ago, is one of the legitimate shots of knocking off Logan Stieber in his attempt for four titles. The Khishignyam of last year however, isn't even a sure lock to win the SOCON title.
149 - Sophomore Mountaineer Dylan Cottrell looks to defend his title, but will have competition from Kevin Birmingham who looks to end his career at Davidson with a SOCON title and Matt Frisch of The Citadel.
157 - I don't see 157 being any tougher of a weight in the SOCON than it was this past season, so Bulldog sophomore Aaron Walker of The Citadel ought to add another title to his resume.
165 - It can't sit too well for senior Cory Mock to know that he whipped Turtogtok Luvsandorj of The Citadel for the SOCON title, only to watch Luvsandorj make All American, while he himself was unable to accomplish the same feat. Mock, in my opinion, is the SOCON's best bet for an All American this season. Although I doubt he'll challenge him for the title, Austin Trott of Gardner Webb ought to make the finals and most likely be the Running Bulldogs best wrestler.
174 - Look for Levi Clemons to end his career at Chattanooga with another SOCON title.
184 - I really don't know what to think here. I'd like to see Ville Heino win the weight class, as I would really like to see Campbell have an NCAA qualifier.
197 - The Citadel's Marshall Haas looks to take the title here.
HWT - With SIE-Edwardsville's David Devine and Campbell's Eloheim Palma both gone due to graduation, Moc Dawson Peck of Chattanooga ought to win his first SOCON title this season.
I'd like to see all eight teams qualify at least one wrestler to the NCAA championships and I'm pretty confident about 5 of the 8 teams. Chattanooga, Appalachian State and The Citadel ought to have no problem getting guys through. I'm pretty confident in Birmingham giving Davidson a qualifier and Trott wrestling well enough throughout the season to earn a bid for Gardner Webb. Not as confident in Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, VMI or Campbell. Lots of good coaching at these schools, as I do think within due time Chris Skretkowicz will turn things around for the Keydets and Cary Kolat could possibly turn things around for the Camels. I know that Kyle Blevins is working hard to get things done at Gardner Webb.
Throughout the history of wrestling, most of our fan base is BIG 10 crazy, with a fair amount representing the BIG XII, the EIWA and as of late the MAC. A few stragglers amongst the ACC and the PAC-12, and even fewer amongst the EWL and the WWC. The SOCON though is the least paid attention to conference in Division I wrestling. I think if all eight teams could qualify at least one wrestler to the NCAA's that would help tremendously. We'll see what happens.
