Starting today each weekday a new set of D1CW Conference Awards winners will be announced. Leading off is the West Region or WWC.
2013-14 D1CW WWC Wrestler of the Year: Steven Monk (North Dakota State) Steven Monk's 3rd place finish at 165 lbs makes him the highest National placewinner at the DI level, in program history. Monk's 36-2 record brought his career mark up to 134-24 overall for the Bison. During his Senior season Monk won 14 of his 36 matches by fall, racked up six tech falls, and also had two major decisions. In the two previous seasons Steven finished one match shy of All-American status. Prior to the NCAA Championships, he captured his third WWC Championship.
2013-14 D1CW Coach of the Year: Roger Kish (North Dakota State) In the 2013-14 season Roger Kish's NDSU Bison won their first WWC Championship in school history. Three Bison wrestlers were Conference Champions and NDSU topped the defending champion Wyoming 74-66. Four NDSU wrestlers competed at the NCAA Championships. Steven Monk's 3rd place finish at Nationals marked the second consecutive season in which a Bison wrestler earned All-American honors.
2013-14 D1CW Freshman of the Year: Ben Stroh (Wyoming) In his first collegiate match Ben Stroh defeated a 2x NCAA Qualifier from Arizona State. That match marked the start of a 28-8 campaign for the Cowboy's 184lber. Stroh won titles at the Cowboy Open, the Northwest Open, and the Reno Tournament of Champions. At the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational he finished in 5th place. Stroh needed to beat two eventual NCAA Qualifiers in order to win his first conference title. Despite a bad draw at the NCAA Championships, Stroh was able to win a match in the consolations before elimination.
