Ah, Willyman talking to me about comprehension? Comprehend this ... you're asking to justify one Qualifier? 285 pound rankings #16: Patrick Walker, So. Liberty 27-7 ... lost to Matt Fields 4-3 at Midlands. Beat Cleveland State's Rashard Goff 10-4 Beat Southern Conference Champion Josh Wine 13-0 Beat Purdue's Chris Kasten 11-0. Pinned Army's Nathan Thoboben 1:11. I think I've more than justified at least one qualifier. So you're basically saying that they don't belong in Division I. So the entire athletics department should drop to Division II or Division III because their wrestling programs aren't "up to snuff." As usual, your points in trying to rip programs apart are flawed. Their performance is absolutely sub-standard at the NCAAs, but you're saying those kids don't deserve a chance to start with. How about Derek Sola pushing Zack Esposito to the brink in 2003. How about Daniel Elliott beating Gregor Gillespie and ending up the #12 seed at NCAAs. How about Matt Cathell of Delaware State beating Boston U.s Mike Roberts -- the same guy that beat Schlatter AND Caldwell. Checkmate. I got $50 that says he doesn"t AA!

The NCAA just called. The.....
America East Atlantic 10 Atlantic Sun Big Sky Big South Big West Horizon Ivy Metro Atlantic Athletic Mid-Eastern Athletic Northeast Ohio Valley Patriot Southern Southland Southwestern Athletic Sun Belt Summit and West Coast Conference
all decided to drop out of the NCAA Basketball touranment, because the some fans from UNC and Duke decided that they weren't competitive enough over the last ten years. It would be more fun just to watch the Big 10, ACC, PAC 10, SEC, Big 12, and Big East Schools play eachother.
Is Matt Cathell this years George Mason Basketball/Cinderella story??? You never know. Cathell AA'ing would get more national headlines than if 8 Hawkeyes earn AA honors and Tom Brands gets his first title. The media would eat up the story about how a kid from a school that is not supportive in the least bit of their wrestling program perserveres to become an AA.
Let these kids have their shot. No one is saying they need to get more bids at the expense of other conferences.

So are you going to bet me the same 50 bucks per Big Ten wrestler that doesn't end up an All-American? What about 50 bucks per every Big 12 wrestler that's not an All-American?
Will Walker be an All-American? Probably not, but the kid has more talent in his snot than you will ever have.
Get off of your high horse ... you're nothing but an internet troll with nothing but an attitude. You wouldn't talk any of the smack to these East Region wrestlers to their face ... why? They all have more talent and heart than you do.
Checkmate .. .again. I expect there to be more Big 10 qualifiers than don't place than East Region Qualifiers that don't place (which is the same logic you apply to everything).

well said earl and jb. first i want to say i have no problems w/ willy, except for his opinion on this subject but it is his opinion. i think willy brings alot to this board and i have said that before. but let me tell you guys something, i know matt cathell, i know his heart and i know his love for the sport. he deserves to be at the big show period. he can beat anyone at anytime if he is on. i have been taken him to tournaments for a couple years know and his love for this sport is untouchable. so my biggest grip w/ willy is that he needs to understand that he deserves everything he gets in this sport w/ everything he puts into it.

Wrestling should go to a regional system. Then the wild card thing will not be a problem.

^^^We only have 87 Div I wreslting programs, and most operate in the red. We don't need a regional system. If we went back to having an "open" NCAA Tournament and each university paid its own way, pure economics probably would keep the total number of entrants around 350. -Stove Pipe

That is pure speculation. A regional , say 4, that is open, with the top eight going to the NCAA `s. When I say open I mean for D2 & D3 teams also. Then we have a real national championship. The pure economics can work at the regional level. It could be 8 regionals with the top four to go. Some creative thinking needs to rise to the top. Wrestling is under assault from the title IX crap. Just some thoughts.

^^^jfs. Man, I used to love the old days when the NCAA was open and large and small, university and college, even NAIA schools (with dual membership), could send wrestlers. Open is good and, as far as I'm concerned, big open regionals leading to a 320 NCAA final tounament would be a blast.
I remember back in the late 1950's (thru the 1960's) little Lock Haven State had triple wrestling conference memberships. They wrestled in the PSAC conference, the NAIA national event, and the NCAA's. Was that a treat or what?!?!?
Ah, darn, I hear the theme from "Gone With the Wind" playing in the background as I reminese (sp?). Jfs, I always enjoy your posts. -Stove Pipe

Willy sometimes I admire your work and thinking and sometimes I deplore it. Do you use lithium. or what? So much of your stuff is exemplary and then you come up with this stuff. I wish there were still 150 programs, even though the talent pools were even more diluted. It is all about expansion or death. The best thing that could happen to wrestling IMO is for several of these conferences to produce several AAs. I think we should all be cheering for that, not cuts in programs or lowering schools from D1. I for one hope Walker and Cathell don't get death by bracket. They have beaten some ranked guys. Love to see them catch a B10 7 and a 5 inch pickem in the first two rounds to get them in perspective. Oh I meant BIG 5 sorry
